Calgary Labiaplasty Specialist
Labiaplasty (also referred to as labial contouring, labia reduction, or labioplasty) is a labia surgery that will reduce the length of the labia minora (the inner lips of the vagina) and/or address unequal labia minora to suit your desired appearance. All labia are naturally different shapes and sizes, and all the variations are completely normal.
Some women find that their labia cause bulkiness and discomfort when they wear certain clothing. Other women are uncomfortable during exercise such as bike riding or with sexual activity. In some cases, labia have changed with age or they may have been damaged or injured through childbirth or previous surgery. In all of these cases, a labia reduction treatment can help.
Dr. Allan trained in California in 2001 to learn his unique laser labiaplasty methods, and he has performed over a thousand procedures since then. Dr. Allan’s specialty is in vaginal and labia surgery and he is the most experienced labiaplasty surgeon in not just Calgary, or Alberta, but Canada.
The labia are a delicate area and over the years Dr. Allan has developed techniques that result in a virtually painless procedure with minimal recovery time and minimal risks. You have the option of having your labiaplasty performed under general anaesthetic (i.e. you are “asleep”) or with local anaesthetic so you can avoid the risks and prolonged recovery time associated with general anaesthetic. This means you are able to drive to and from your appointment if you choose. Labiaplasty takes about an hour to perform and involves anaesthetizing the labia and trimming them to the desired size and shape with a laser or radiofrequency device. Stitches are used to support the labia while they heal. This is a very safe procedure and risks are very minimal.
Following a labiaplasty, you will not have any discomfort for about four to six hours. This gives you time to get home and get comfortable. When the freezing comes out, most women find it uncomfortable enough for the next 24 hours that they will need strong medication. We will send you home with two different kinds of medications and an ice pack. We recommend that you take the medications regularly for the first 24 hours. After that, many women reduce the amount of medication. Most women will take three to four days off work or school. You should reduce your activity significantly for the first two weeks and wait for a full six weeks before returning to full activities and heavy workouts. The stitches will dissolve on their own.
It is important when choosing a surgeon to perform your laser labiaplasty you make sure they are fully trained and experienced in this delicate and intimate procedure. Dr. Allan is a gynecologist certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada who is trained in vaginal and labia surgery, and has been performing labiaplasty in Calgary for over 20 years. During your consultation, we will be happy to show you photos taken before and after labiaplasty procedures done previously, so you know what to expect.
