Labiaplasty (also referred to as labial contouring or labioplasty) will reduce the length of the labia minora (the inner lips of the vagina) and/or address unequal labia minora according to your preference. Be assured, labia are naturally different shapes and sizes and all the variations are completely normal.
Some women find that their labia cause bulkiness and discomfort when they wear certain clothing. Other women are uncomfortable during exercise such as bike riding or with sexual activity. In some cases, labia have changed with age or they may have been damaged or injured through childbirth or previous surgery.
Dr. Allan trained in Beverly Hills, California in 2001 to learn his unique laser methods and he has performed over a thousand procedures since then. Dr. Allan’s specialty is in labial and vaginal surgery and he is the most experienced surgeon in Canada in modifying and repairing labia.
The labia are a delicate area and over the years Dr. Allan has developed techniques that result in a virtually painless procedure with minimal recovery time and minimal risks. You have the option of having this procedure performed under general anaesthetic (i.e. you are “asleep”) but most women have labiaplasty performed with local anaesthetic so you don’t need to undergo the risks or prolonged recovery time associated with general anaesthetic. This means you are able to drive to and from your appointment if you choose. Labiaplasty takes about an hour to perform and involves anaesthetizing the labia and trimming them to the desired size and shape with a laser or radiofrequency device. Stitches are used to support the labia while they heal. This is a very safe procedure and risks are very minimal.
Following a labiaplasty you will not have any discomfort for about four to six hours. This gives you time to get home and get comfortable. When the freezing comes out most women find it uncomfortable enough for the next 24 hours that they will need strong medication. We will send you home with two different kinds of medications and an ice pack. We recommend that you take the medications regularly for the first 24 hours. After that, many women reduce the amount of medication. Most women will take three to four days off work or school. You should reduce your activity significantly for the first two weeks and wait for a full six weeks before returning to full activities and heavy workouts. The stitches will dissolve on their own.
It is important when choosing a surgeon to perform your labiaplasty you make sure they are fully trained and experienced in this delicate and intimate woman’s procedure. Dr. Allan is a gynecologist certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada who is trained in vaginal surgery and has been performing labiaplasty for over 20 years. We will be happy to show you before and after photos when you come in for your consultation so you know what to expect.
