The hymen is a thin piece of tissue which covers the opening of the vagina. It can be easily torn through exercise or tampon insertion. Having a torn hymen doesn’t mean that a woman has been sexually active or had sexual intercourse. However, an intact hymen is often felt to mean that a woman is virgin.
Many women come to see us because they want to repair a torn hymen. This can be done by a procedure called a hymenoplasty. Dr. Allan has been performing this procedure for over 20 years.
There are very few surgeons in Canada trained to perform this very delicate procedure safely and properly. Hymenoplasty or hymenal repair is done in the privacy of our office using local anaesthetic. That means that you can drive yourself to and from our office. The hymen is repaired using scalpel and laser techniques. Very delicate sutures are used to put the hymen back together in a virtually painless one hour procedure.
Following hymenoplasty you will not have any discomfort for about four to six hours. This gives you time to get home and get comfortable. When the freezing comes out most women find it just mildly uncomfortable for the next 24 hours. We will send you home with two different kinds of medications and an ice pack. We recommend that you take the medications regularly for the first 24 hours. After that, many women reduce the amount of medication or don’t require any medication for discomfort. Most women will return to work or school within two days. You should reduce your activity for the first two weeks and wait for a full six weeks before returning to full activities and heavy workouts. The sutures dissolve on their own over the next few weeks leaving the hymen intact without any visible scars.
It is important when choosing a surgeon to perform your hymenoplasty you make sure they are fully trained and experienced in this delicate and intimate woman’s procedure. Dr. Allan is a gynecologist certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada who is trained in vaginal surgery and has been performing hymenoplasty for over 20 years.
