Hymenoplasty surgery, also called hymenal repair and hymen repair, is the restoration of the hymen after it has been torn or disturbed. The hymen is a thin piece of tissue that covers the opening of the vagina. It can be easily torn through exercise or tampon insertion. Having a torn hymen does not mean that a girl or woman has been sexually active or had sexual intercourse. However, an intact hymen is often felt to mean that she is a virgin. Many women come to the Allan Centre because they want to repair a hymen. This can be done by a procedure called a hymenoplasty. Dr. Allan has been performing surgical and laser hymenoplasty procedures for over 20 years.
There are very few surgeons in Canada trained to perform this very delicate procedure safely and properly. Hymenoplasty surgery is done in the privacy of the Allan Centre using local anaesthetic. That means you can drive yourself to and from our office if desired. Restoration of the hymen can be completed using both surgical and laser techniques. Very delicate sutures are used to put the hymen back together in a virtually painless one-hour procedure.
Following hymenoplasty surgery, patients typically do not feel any discomfort for approximately four to six hours, which allows enough time to drive home and get comfortable. When the local anaesthetic wears off, most women are mildly uncomfortable for the next 24 hours. We will send you home with two different kinds of medications to use for pain relief. We recommend taking the medications regularly for the first 24 hours. After that, many patients can reduce or eliminate the medication. Most women can return to work or school within two days. You should reduce your activity for the first two weeks and wait six weeks before returning to normal activities. The sutures dissolve on their own over the next few weeks, leaving the hymen intact without any visible scars.
When choosing a surgeon for your hymenoplasty, it is important to ensure they are fully trained and experienced in this delicate and intimate procedure. Dr. Allan is a gynecologist certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, who is trained and experienced in hymenoplasty surgery, having performed hymen repairs for over 20 years.
