Clitoral Hood Reduction
Some women find that there is too much extra tissue over the clitoris or along the sides of the clitoral hood and they don’t like the way it looks or feels. Others feel that the excess skin interferes with stimulation of the clitoris during sexual intimacy. Removing this excess skin via clitoral hood reduction surgery will change the appearance of this area. If desired, exposing more of the clitoris to stimulation during sexual activity may heighten pleasurable sensations.
The clitoris and the clitoral hood are very delicate area, and over the years Dr. Allan has developed techniques that result in a virtually painless procedure with minimal recovery time and minimal risks. The procedure is done using a local anaesthetic, which means you are able to drive to and from your appointment if you like. Clitoral hood reduction takes about an hour to perform and involves anaesthetizing the clitoral hood and trimming the excess tissue with a laser or radiofrequency device. Stitches are used to support the incision while it heals. This is a very safe procedure and risks are very minimal.
Following a clitoral hood reduction surgery, the area will be completely “frozen” for about four to six hours, which means you should not have any discomfort and you’ll have enough time to get comfortable at home. After the freezing wears off, many women find it uncomfortable enough for the next 24 hours to need strong pain medication. You will be sent home with two different kinds of medicines and an ice pack to manage your pain. We encourage you take the medications regularly for the first 24 hours to minimize your discomfort. After that, you may reduce the amount of medication as needed. Most women will take three to four days off in order to recover. You will need to significantly reduce your activity for the first two weeks, and wait a full six weeks before returning to full activities such as heavy workouts and sexual activity. The stitches are dissolving and will not require removal.
Clitoral hood reduction surgery, sometimes referred to as clit hood reduction, is a very delicate procedure that should only be entrusted to a surgeon trained in vaginal surgery. Dr. Allan has performed hundreds of clitoral hood reduction surgeries over the past 20 years and is able to show you numerous before and after photos at your consultation.
