Frequently Asked Questions
After you send us a request for a consultation we will get in touch with you within 24 hours. Our staff will do their best to book a consultation with Dr. Allan within the next one to two weeks. You have the option of having a phone consult if you are out of town or it is not convenient to travel to the Allan Centre.
A referral is not required for cosmetic procedures. You can book with us directly – simply request a consultation and we will make arrangements. Appointments for non-cosmetic procedures require a referral from a Family Physician.
During your confidential consultation, Dr. Allan will discuss your concerns and the outcome you would like to achieve. He will review your medical and surgical history and will perform a pelvic exam to ensure you are an appropriate candidate for the procedure you are interested in, and to get a better idea of what your desired outcome is. Based on your goals we will discuss all treatment options, the risks involved in each, and the expected outcomes.
Following your consultation we are usually able to book your procedure within four to eight weeks. We will do our best to accommodate your schedule.
Consultations with Dr. Allan are free of charge and typically take about 25 minutes.
Many of our patients from out of town choose to start the process with a phone consultation. Dr. Allan will discuss the procedures fully and will ask you for your medical history. When you come in for your procedure he will do an exam and go over the exact details of your procedure. Therefore, in most cases you will only need to make one trip to Calgary. Our office staff will be happy to help you with travel arrangements and accommodation in Calgary. Please note that travel costs and any other costs involved with your stay in Calgary are not included in the cost of the surgery.
Cosmetic procedures are not covered by the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) and the cost will vary depending on the type and extent of the procedure you choose. We will provide you with a fee range once we know the procedure(s) you are interested in and desired outcomes.
We will be happy to show you before and after photos at the time of your consultation. Dr. Allan has performed hundreds of these procedures and has an extensive number of before and after photos. We do not put them on our website for privacy reasons, but you can look at them at our office when you come for your consultation or before your procedure.
We will send you home with detailed instructions on how to care for yourself after your procedure as well as a care package with everything you will need. Exact details will depend on the procedure you had.
You will be able to contact Dr. Allan directly at any time following your procedure if you have any questions or concerns. We will also arrange a follow up appointment so we can make sure everything is going fine as you are healing and after your recovery.
Your recovery will depend on the procedure that you had. The Viveve procedure has no recovery time. After the surgical procedures (labiaplasty, vaginoplasty, hymenoplasty, clitoral hood reduction, etc.) you will want to take two to three days to rest and not plan to do very much. If you have a job that is very active and you are on your feet most of the day, you may want to take up to seven days off. It is recommended that you avoid most activity (running, biking, yoga, hiking, etc.) for four to six weeks.
We recommend that you not have intercourse for six weeks after a surgical procedure.
Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation™ is the cosmetic surgical modification of the vagina using laser and plastic surgery techniques, which physically tightens the vagina. The Viveve procedure is a revolutionary new, non-surgical technique for vaginal tightening. There is no pain and no recovery time. When you meet with Dr. Allan he will discuss whether you are a candidate for the non-surgical Viveve procedure or the surgical Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation procedure. Together you will decide which is the best procedure for you.
Medically necessary services such as traditional obstetrical and gynecologic concerns are covered by the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP). Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy is not covered, although some private medical plans will cover a portion of physiotherapy costs. Cosmetic procedures such as Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation™, Labiaplasty, Vaginoplasty, and Viveve are not covered by Alberta Health Care.
