The market has been flooded in the past couple years with new devices for non-surgical vaginal treatments.  These treatments are rapidly growing in popularity as there has previously been limited options for women’s vaginal health. Also, these techniques typically involve less pain and much less downtime when compared to surgical procedures.

New devices on the market include ThermiVa, Intimalase, Incontilase, Femilift, Mona Lisa Touch, Diva and Viveve.

These lasers and radio-frequency devices are aimed at treating a number of concerns including:

  • Vaginal laxity
  • Atrophy/dryness
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Increasing sensation during intercourse
  • Tightening external tissue
  • Increasing libido or enhancing orgasm

While we think it’s GREAT that women have more treatment options available to them for their health, we do think it’s very important that women receive thorough education on these therapies prior to being treated.

Whether you’re curious about laser or radio-frequency devices (or don’t have a clue what the difference is between them!) there are some important questions you’ll want to ask your doctor  before you book your treatment:

  • Am I a good candidate for this procedure?
  • Do I have any physical concerns that would prevent me from having this treatment, such as a prolapse?
  • Do I need to have a Pap Test first?
  • What will the treatment feel like?
  • How long is the treatment?
  • Is it painful?  Is anesthetic used?
  • Is there any downtime afterward?
  • When can I have sex again?
  • How many treatments will I need?
  • When will I start to see results?
  • How long will my results last?
  • How long have you had this device?  How many treatments have you done?
  • What are my other treatment options?
  • What is the follow up schedule?
  • How much will my treatments cost?

This may seem like a long list, and the number of devices and treatment options can be overwhelming. There are differences between each device, from how they work to what indication they’re best suited to treat.  Also, because these treatments all deal with the intimate areas of sexual and gynecologic health, you should receive advice directly from a gynecologist such as Dr. Allan, who specialize in women’s sexual health and wellness.

We want to give you the information that you need to help you make the best choice for your health and wellness, so please feel free to call or email us at any time with questions or to book a consultation with Dr. Allan to discuss your treatment options.
