Botox Cosmetic®

Botox Cosmetic® and Dysport® are used to treat facial lines, wrinkles, and hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating).

Cosmetically, Botox Cosmetic® treatments and Dysport® are primarily used to correct lines in the upper half of the face such as forehead and frown lines, “bunny lines” on the nose and crow’s feet. They can also be used to shape and lift the eyebrows.

Dysport® is newer to Canada, and is an alternative to Botox Cosmetic® treatments with the same active ingredient. It has been used in Europe since 1990, and studies have shown no differences in the action or side effects of the two products. Some studies show evidence that Dysport® may have an earlier onset and slightly longer duration than Botox Cosmetic® treatments.

Unlike facial fillers, Botox Cosmetic® treatments and Dysport® don’t fill in facial lines or restore volume loss. They relax the muscles underneath the skin that cause lines through repetitive facial movements. Very tiny amounts of a purified protein are injected into specific muscle areas. As the muscle relaxes, the wrinkle overlying the muscle is smoothed away, and in most cases, nearly invisible in a week. Since the treatment only relaxes the muscle beneath the injection site, it has no effect on other elements of facial expression. There is no numbness in the area of injection because it does not affect your sensory nerves. Results last approximately 3-4 months. In order to achieve the best results, Botox Cosmetic® treatments and Dysport® are often used in combination with facial fillers.

With just one treatment, Botox Cosmetic® treatments can be used to reduce or eliminate underarm sweating for 4 – 12 months.

Using very small needles a small amount of Botox Cosmetic® treatments is placed under the skin in the underarm area Botox Cosmetic® injections for excessive sweating are quick and have no down time, you can immediately go about your daily activities. Within a week you should notice a significant reduction in underarm sweat. Results usually last 4 – 12 months, and the area can be re-treated once signs of excessive sweating start to return.
